Manchester United defeated a hard working but unadventurous Rangers side at Ibrox Park on Wednesday evening. The Scottish champions defended deep and frustrated United for most of the match despite the amount of possession the Red Devils enjoyed. Wayne Rooney who had missed several earlier chances gleefully buried a late penalty to send the travelling fans into raptures.
After the match a delighted Rooney said "I wanted to celebrate with our fans," he stated. "It is always nice to beat Rangers away. Hopefully I can go on a goalscoring run now but really I am just delighted to be back playing again. I felt good. I felt fit throughout the game. I want to build on this performance and this goal."
Sir Alex Ferguson now wants his side to finish top of Group C with victory over Spanish rivals Valencia, who also reached the next round with a 6-1 win over Bursaspor. "We want to go and win the group," he said. "We've got Valencia at home, we can look forward to that."
United play Blackburn Rovers at home on Saturday kick off 3pm
Next week they travel to West Ham in the Carling Cup before heading off to Blackpool for a day out by the seaside.
The Valencia game is on 7th December at Old Trafford.
