Dimitar Berbatov continued his rich vein of goalscoring form on Boxing Day with a brace as Manchester United beat Steve Bruce’s Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford. The Red Devils dominated proceedings in a festive fixture which saw ex-Red Phillip Bardsley booked against his former club.
United
remain unbeaten in the league and sit top of the table following a fine 2-0 win
over the Black Cats on Sunday afternoon.
Bulgarian frontman Berbatov was in clinical form and broke the deadlock after
only five minutes as he nodded home a Wayne Rooney cross.
The lead was doubled shortly before the hour mark as Berbatov’s deflected shot hit the net. He latched onto Anderson’s pass and the striker’s effort clipped Anton Ferdinand before beating Craig Gordon.
United were rampant after Berbatov’s early opener and could have won the game by a considerably bigger margin.
Sunderland, by contrast, failed to carve out
opportunities and registered their first shot on target with 78 minutes on the
clock. Edwin van der Sar, expected to retire in May, had an incredibly quiet
afternoon at the office.
The Reds slowed the pace of the game down as proceedings wore on as the players
look ahead to a busy upcoming schedule of games.
