Neville: Sometimes England career seemed 'waste of time'

Gary Neville has sparked outrage amongst many England supporters by claiming that he often considered his international career to be a waste of time. The former Manchester United full-back, who won 85 caps for his country, also ruled out England's chances of winning a major tournament for the next decade.

Neville played in two World Cups for England and was a regular on the international scene between 1995 and 2007. The United legend has hit the headlines after comments from his book Red were serialised in the Mail on Sunday. He said: "There have been times when I've reflected on my international career and just thought: 'Well that was a massive waste of time. "[I am] sorry for sounding sour, but my best mate, David Beckham, got butchered after the World Cup in 1998, then my brother, Phil, after Euro 2000." Neville has also said that he cannot see the national side challenging for major honours for at least ten years, as Fabio Capello's men prepare for the upcoming qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.
