Only three of Wednesday’s six League Cup ties were settled in 90 minutes on another exciting evening of knock-out action. Owen Hargreaves scored a shock goal on his Manchester City debut as United’s fierce rivals comfortably beat Birmingham, whilst Chelsea needed penalty kicks to beat neighbours Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea needed penalty kicks to beat rivals Fulham after 120 minutes of goalless Cup action, whilst Steven Gerrard returned for Liverpool as Craig Bellamy found the net in a 2-1 win at Brighton.
Ex-Red Hargreaves, however, grabbed the headlines as he scored City's opener in a 2-0 win over Birmingham.
Elsewhere, Cardiff City won on spot-kicks against Leicester in South Wales, whilst Newcastle United won a thrilling game 4-3 at the City Ground after extra-time.
David Moyes' Everton came from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion in extra-time, whist Championship pace setters Southampton continued their fine run of form with victory over Preston.
Wednesday's action completes the fourth round line-up and fans can now look ahead expectantly to Saturday's draw.
