Red Rebels claim narrow festive win over Ashton United

FC United of Manchester claimed a timely Boxing Day triumph at Gigg Lane with a 2-1 win over Ashton United. Goals from Mike Norton and Lee Neville handed the Red Rebels maximum points in front of 1,926 supporters at Gigg Lane.

Norton broke the deadlock in only the third minute as he drilled home a rebound after Matthew Wolfenden’s shot fired against the woodwork.

The visitors drew level ten minutes later, however, as Chris Amadi showed good pace to out-run the FC full-back and fire home the equalising goal.

Karl Marginson’s men scored the winning goal four minutes after half-time as Wolfenden’s cross was headed across goal by and Neville duly turned the ball home from six yards out.

Boxing Day’s triumph ensures United bounce back from their defeat at Northwich Victoria and gives the Rebels a timely boost as they end 2011 on a high.

The breakaway club presently sit seventh in the Northern Premier League table and return to action on January 2nd at Bradford Park Avenue.
