Hanley: Blackburn deserved all three points
Winning goal

Blackburn Rovers’ Grant Hanley said he felt his side were worthy winners after he grabbed a surprise winning goal at Old Trafford on New Year’s Eve. Steve Kean’s Rovers claimed a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, spoiling Sir Alex Ferguson’s birthday celebrations and denying the Red Devils a place at the top of the league table as 2011 draws to a close.
Hanley headed home the winning goal on 80 minutes as United suffered a shock defeat against Kean’s struggling Rovers.
The match-winner chose the perfect time to score his first goal for the club as Rovers claimed their first away league win of the season to propel themselves off the foot of the table.
He admits that his goalscoring heroics have not yet “sunk in”, as Blackburn celebrate a first win at Old Trafford since 2005.
Hanley is quoted on Blackburn Rovers’ official website as saying: "We put a real shift in. The lads worked really hard.
“We kept our shape and I think we deserved everything we got. The confidence levels have been high all season, but we've not been getting the results”.
United, without talisman frontman Wayne Rooney, will rue this result which ends a fantastic run of five league wins on the bounce. The Reds return to action on Wednesday at Newcastle United.
