Paul Scholes marked his Old Trafford comeback with a goal as United strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over Bolton. Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick also hit the net as the Red Devils claimed victory over their Lancashire rivals.
Scholes broke the deadlock shortly before half-time to the delight of the Old Trafford faithful.
Critics have questioned Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to bring back the midfielder, but he rolled back the years as he turned Wayne Rooney's cross into the back of the net.
Rooney had earlier missed a penalty for the Red Devils, with goalkeeper Adam Bogdan pulling off a great save, but Scholes' goal settled the home side's nerves.
Welbeck doubled the advantage with 16 minutes to go, just as the visitors were starting to build in confidence. The Englishman injured his knee as he poked the ball beyond the reach of Bogdan, and could now face a short spell on the sidelines.
Carrick wrapped up the win for United in the closing stages as he met Ryan Giggs' pass with a cool 20-yard finish.
Darren Pratley went close for the visitors at the end, but United claimed a clean sheet and three big points in the title race
The result put United level on points with fierce rivals Manchester City at the top of the table, though the Citizens have a game in hand. Sir Alex's men, who pulled two points clear of Spurs on Saturday, return to action at Arsenal next weekend.
