Will Beckham captain Team GB?

Former Manchester United star David Beckham is hoping to captain Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Manager Stuart Pearce has confirmed that Beckham is on his radar to be picked for the squad, as is Manchester United winger, Welshman Ryan Giggs.

36-year-old Beckham recently signed a two-year new contract at LA Galaxy, ending speculation that he was set for a return to Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain made no secret of their desire to sign the midfielder, whilst Beckham has revealed that he turned down approaches from two Premier Clubs for his services.

He has also confirmed that he not only remains very eager to play for Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, but that he wants to captain the side.

“I would love to be captain. I was lucky enough to captain my country and to lead Great Britain into an Olympics would be special for any player.” he said.

Becks added: “It's an Olympics in the east end of London, where I grew up, and I am excited about, hopefully, being involved. I've had conversations with Stuart Pearce and as long as I'm fit, healthy and in form, hopefully I have a chance of making the team.”

There can be little doubt that Beckham would take enormous pride in representing Team GB, and would enhance public interest in the football tournament of the eagerly-anticipated Games.

He would surely provide a tremendous influence to other players in the squad and, with a return to Fabio Capello’s England set-up looking less likely, be the perfect spectacle for Beckham to make a comeback on British soil.

Beckham, who insists he is eager to keep playing professional football beyond 2014, left United in 2003 to join Spanish giants Real Madrid. He made 394 appearances for United, scoring 85 goals.
