Manchester United slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Carrow Road in Saturday's teatime kick-off. A fine header from Anthony Pilkington was enough to give Norwich City maximum points as United missed out on the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League.
Pilkington skillfully directed a header beyond the reach of David De Gea on 60 minutes, capitalising on a teasing cross from Javier Garrido.
United had been knocked off the top of the league table earlier on Saturday after Manchester City thumped Aston Villa, and failed to reclaim pole position following a poor display in Norfolk.
The visitors severely lacked a creative spark, with Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez denied decent service from midfield. Norwich's defence proved very effective.
Norwich stopper John Ruddy did well to deny Ashley Young and a header from his team-mate Sebastien Bassong, but United were poor for long periods.
Sir Alex introduced Danny Welbeck and Paul Scholes with 20 minutes to go, but that couldn't rejuvenate a flat and uninspiring performance from the Red Devils.
Following six minutes of added time, the full-time whistle was met by jubilant scenes around Carrow Road as Norwich claimed their third league win of the campaign. United, who now sit second, will be need to improve to keep pace at the top.
