Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United march on in the FA Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 win over West Ham United, ensuring the club’s silverware challenge continues on three fronts. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game, but also missed a penalty, as United narrowly edged out the battling Irons.
Rooney scored the only goal of the game on nine minutes. Anderson found Javier Hernandez with a defence-splitting pass, and the Mexican charged down the flank before squaring for the England frontman who finished comfortably.
However, any United fans who expected the Red Devils to go on and secure a comfortable victory were proved wrong – as Sam Allardyce’s Hammers proved stubborn opposition and will feel unfortunate not to have found a way passed David De Gea.
United had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the second-half – but Rooney fired a spot-kick horribly over the bar after Jordan Spence tripped Ryan Giggs. It was his tenth penalty miss for the Red Devils – perhaps highlighting why more fans, according to our on-going poll, would prefer RVP to take penalties.
The visiting side enjoyed plenty of late pressure, with Matt Taylor and Kevin Nolan spurning chances for the London outfit, as United held on to the delight of the majority of a 71,081 crowd. A home clash with Fulham awaits in round four.

He should be the number 1 penalty taker at all times. He probably thinks he's been at the club only a few months and shouldn't demand to take them always, but by golly he should.
