Sir Alex believes United were 'fortunate' to beat Saints

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted his Manchester United side were “fortunate” to claim all three points against Southampton on Wednesday evening. A brace from Wayne Rooney was key to United’s narrow 2-1 victory – but the Saints piled pressure on Fergie’s men in the second-half and will feel their performance warranted at least a share of the spoils.

Rooney scored two first-half goals to cancel out Jay Rodriguez’s opener as United opened up a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League tree.

However, Southampton’s spirited and ambitious performance piled much pressure on United, who spent much of the second-half on the back foot.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Sir Alex said: "For the first 30 minutes we were fantastic,”

"But in the second half Southampton have been the best team to play here this season. We were fortunate to win."

The Scotsman will be hoping for a more convincing Manchester United display as they return to league action on Saturday with a tricky tea-time clash at Fulham.
