On February 6 1958, 23 people lost their lives in the Munich Air Disaster.  Amongst those killed were eight Manchester United players and three club officials. 55 years have now passed since the disaster – but those who lost their lives must never, and will never, be forgotten.

In 1958, Sir Matt Busby’s Manchester United were on their way home from Belgrade, where they had claimed a 3-3 draw with Red Star in the European Cup, ensuring safe passage to the semi-finals of the competition.

For many, it was to be their final game of football. British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt at take-off from Munich-Riem airport, taking the lives of 23 people.

The crash took the lives of some the most promising young players ever to grace the Football League. Amongst the 23 to lose their lives were also journalists, the flight's co-pilot, a United-supporting racehorse owner and a steward.

Below are a list of the 23 people who passed away on the 6th of February 1958. May they all rest in peace and always be remembered. Please spare them a thought on the 55th anniversary of the tragedy.

The banner at Old Trafford was huge and the Everton fans gave the families of the Munich victims a generous round of applause. My seat on Sunday was up in the top of the Scoreboard End so couldn't see all the huge flag but it was a good sight.

I liked "Stand up for the Busby Babes" too!

I have a new found respect and admiration for Real Madrid. A classy deed by their club to ours.

Had it not been for the disaster you do wonder how long we could have dominated Europe for.
