Manchester United edged past Liverpool in a highly charged third round League Cup match at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. The ground was noisy as both sets of fans made their presence felt in this keenly fought cup tie. United grabbed the only goal of the game at the start of the second half when Javier Hernandez deftlly turned in Wayne Rooney's corner.

Moyes made a number of changes to the team beaten at Manchester City on Sunday and those players coming in, notably Johnny Evans (many people's Man of the Match) rose to the challenge against a very strong Liverpool side. The visitors were at full strenghth with Luis Suarez returning after his ten match ban.

The crowd were in good voice and ensured the cracking atmosphere was maintained throughout the 90 minutes. Liverpool supporters were allocated nearly 8,000 seats and they sold all their tickets.

United lined up as follows, with Wayne Rooney named as captain and coach Ryan Giggs in the starting eleven.

United battled throughout the match, Liverpool dominated for long periods but could not convert their chances and as the game got older United gained in confidence and looked more likely to add to the scoresheet as the match reached it's conclusion.

Moyes name rang around the ground to the Slade tune Come on Feel the noise and despite two defeats in the premier league this was the 5th win in 8 matches for the new manager which actually is the best strat for a new United manager since 1946.

In the next round Norwich City will visit Old Trafford during the week commencing 28th October.
