Robin van Persie bagged three goals to become the Netherlands’ record goalscorer amid a stunning 8-1 victory in Amsterdam.

Reports had suggested that RVP was a minor doubt for the game with a toe problem – but he was on clinical form as the Dutch continued their rampant World Cup qualification form.

He bagged three goals, taking his international goalscoring tally to 41, eclipsing Patrick Kluivert’s record in the process.

Louis van Gaal’s men led 4-0 at the interval, with RVP grabbing two goals and Kevin Strootman and Jeremain Lens also on target.

A 47th-minute penalty from Balazs Dzsudzsak gave the Hungarians some consolation, but the Oranje were not deterred and scored a further four times.

RVP secured his hat-trick on 53 minutes, before an own-goal from a Szilard Devecseri own-goal extended the scoreline.

Late strikes from Rafael van der Vaart and Arjen Robben capped an incredible night for Van Gaal’s men, who had already booked their place at the 2014 World Cup and have picked up 25 points from their nine qualifying games to date.

Congratulations RVP – the Netherlands’ all-time top goalscorer.
