A late equaliser from Adam Lallana secured a deserved point for Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, as the Red Devils' disappointing start to the Premier League campaign continues.
With only moments left, Dejan Lovren flicked Shaw's corner towards goal, and Lallana - standing in front of United 'keeper David De Gea - got a touch as the ball found its way into the back of the net.
The home side had broken the deadlock on 26 minutes after Adnan Januzaj split open the Saints defence with a stunning through ball. Rooney latched onto the pass, and though he thwarted by goalkeeper ?, RVP collected the loose ball and steered a fine finish home from an acute angle.
Januzaj's stunning pass followed news that the 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a new five-year-deal with the club.
Rooney came close to doubling United's lead when he smashed a Nani pass against the crossbar, but it was Southampton who controlled possession for long periods and will feel well worthy of the point they took home to the south coast.
United, eighth in the table, now sit eight points behind league leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils now prepare for three home games in seven days in three competitions, kicking off with Real Sociedad in the Champions League on Wednesday.
