United lose at home to Newcastle for first time since 1972

Yohan Cabaye scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle United won at Old Trafford for the first time since 1972, inflicting another worrying defeat on the Premier League Champions, who sit ninth.

Following a mixed start to the season, a busy December always looked an important month for Manchester United - but it has started in disastrous fashion.

After a disappointing defeat and performance against Everton on Wednesday evening, the Red Devils slipped to successive home defeats with a 1-0 reverse at the hands of the Barcodes.

Cabaye grabbed the only goal of the game on 72 minutes as he met Moussa Sissoko's low cross with a neat finish, sparking scenes of wild celebration in the away end.

Despite an impressive spell after the half-time break, it was another lacklustre performance from the Champions. The absence of Wayne Rooney was clear to see, whilst United's midfield constantly struggled to get a grip of the game and lacked creative spark.

Robin van Persie did have a goal ruled out for offside, whilst Patrice Evra's header ended up hitting the woodwork, but United too rarely carved out opportunities and Newcastle played with confidence and belief as they became the third team to win a league game at Old Trafford this season.

Following Saturday's action, United sit ninth with 22 points from 15 outings. Should table-toppers Arsenal beat Roberto Martinez's Everton on Sunday, David Moyes' men will trail the league leaders by 15 points.
