Real Madrid coach plays down United's Champions League hopes

Real Madrid coach Paul Clement has downplayed Manchester United’s chances of success in this season’s Uefa Champions League.

All four Premier League representatives have qualified for the competition’s knock-out phases, but Clement has not talked up United’s chances following the summer departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Writing in the Guardian, Clement said: “Manchester United are going through that transition period after Sir Alex Ferguson and Chelsea are going through a little bit of a transition now too”.

He added: “In my opinion the teams that are the strongest at the moment are probably Manchester City and Arsenal”.

The Red Devils prepare for the knock-out phases of the Champions League having completed an unbeaten Group A campaign with a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

United's continental form has provided much-needed tonic for new boss David Moyes further to a difficult run of form in the Premier League, with the club presently sitting mid-table in ninth.
