Rooney expected to return on New Year's Day

Wayne Rooney is expected to return to the Manchester United line-up on New Year’s Day when Spurs visit Old Trafford.

Rooney was absent from United’s win at Norwich City on Saturday with a recurrence of a groin problem, meaning the Red Devils were without both the England forward and Robin van Persie in attack.

The former Everton man has been on excellent form for United this season – and United boss David Moyes is hoping to welcome him back to the fold as soon as New Year’s Day.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moyes said: "Wayne was missing because he's got an adductor injury in his groin. He missed the Stoke game because of the same injury.

"I think if we hadn't got so many games and we could give him a couple of weeks just to recover properly, I think he'd be fine but I'd expect him to be OK for the next game against Tottenham."

Rooney, who recently scored his 150th league goal in an MUFC shirt, has 11 club goals to his name this season.

Meanwhile, speculation continues about Rooney’s immediate future, with rumours resurfacing in recent weeks about possible interest from Chelsea.
