Lancashire Senior Cup campaign ended by Bolton on penalties

Manchester United crashed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup on penalty kicks on Monday evening, having been moments away from securing a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

The Red Devils were on course to qualify for the last four as Joe Rothwell broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.

Bolton had started brightly, but United's spot-kick gave Warren Joyce's men a boost - and they went onto control the game for long periods.

However, slack United defending saw Zach Clough turn home a free-kick with only three minutes to go, as the Trotters ensured the contest would be decided from twelve yards.

Bolton bagged all five of their penalties as a Reece James miss for MUFC proved the difference. Hopes of defending the Lancashire Senior Cup this season - a trophy the Reds have won 14 times - are now over.
