Larsson strike sinks Giggs' United

Ryan Giggs' second game in charge of Manchester United ended in defeat as Sunderland took a monumental leap towards Premier League safety with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Many fans perceive that for Giggs to have had any chance of being considered, at this time, for the managerial vacancy on a permanent basis, he needed to end the season with four rampant victories.

The Black Cats have ended any such possibility with their first win at the Theatre of Dreams since 1968.

Sebastian Larsson grabbed the only goal of the game as United's hopes of sneaking into next season's Europa League suffered a body blow.

Despite placing an emphasis on attack, United struggled to break down Sunderland's stubborn defensive resistance. Their goal came on the half-hour mark as Larsson outfoxed Michael Carrick and delivered a strong finish.

This was Sunderland's day, and as their away fans celebrated another famous visit to Old Trafford following their League Cup triumph, Giggs will be hoping for big improvements ahead of Hull's visit to the North West, in a game which could mark many goodbyes for the OT faithful.
