Wilson stars as OT bids farewell to Vidic

On an emotional evening at Old Trafford, Manchester United's penultimate league game of the season ended in a comfortable 3-1 victory over Hull City, before interim boss Ryan Giggs gave an emotional address; and Nemanja Vidic bid farewell to the Red Army.

With uncertainty surrounding his future both on and off the pitch, Giggs made a cameo appearance from the substitute’s bench – but it was his decision to blood youngster James Wilson which proved pivotal.

Wilson, who shares Giggs’ former surname, bagged a brace as United bounced back from their recent defeat to Sunderland with three points, keeping alive faint hopes of Europa League qualification until the final day of the season.

The deadlock was broken on 31 minutes as Wilson skilfully turned home Adnan Januzaj’s free-kick, and he completed his brace shortly after the hour as he tapped home a rebounded shot following Marouane Fellaini’s miss.

Matty Fryatt’s powerful effort quickly reduced the arreas, but Robin van Persie bagged maximum points for the outgoing Champions as his finish reaffirmed United’s two-goal advantage on 86 minutes.

After the game, Giggs spoke optimistically about United’s future. The Welshman shed a tear as he underlined the club’s great philosophy of giving youth a chance and playing attacking football. Whether Old Trafford will see Giggs next season remains to be seen.
