It may only have been a friendly - but the mood is buoyant at Manchester United after a 3-1 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool ensures the International Champions Cup makes the journey from the USA to OT.

Brendan Rodgers' men were stronger in the opening 45 minutes and led at the interval courtesy of a Steven Gerard penalty, after Phil Jones felled Raheem Sterling.

However, Louis van Gaal delivered a real statement of intent ahead of the new season as his side delivered an exceptional second-half comeback to sink the Scousers.

The excellent Wayne Rooney, United's skipper for the evening, restored parity on 55 minutes as he turned home Javier Hernandez's floating cross, before Juan Mata's deflected effort fired the Red Devils ahead.

Victory was sealed in the closing stages as youngster Jesse along award staked his claim. His strike sealed ICC silverware for United, capping a hugely successful pre-season tour for LVG and his new side.
