Unsurprisingly, Manchester United's most recent acquisition - versatile Argentinean defender Marcos Rojo - will wear the number five jersey.

The shirt was left vacant went the club recently announced squad numbers for the season, further fuelling speculation that a new defender was on the way.

Rojo has joined the club from Sporting Lisbon for a deal thought to be worth in the region of £16million, with winger Luis Nani moving the other way on loan.

The number five jersey was last worn by Rio Ferdinand, who left the club at the end of last season and has now joined fellow Premier League outfit Queens Park Rangers.

Squad numbers seven and nine remain taken, with further transfer activity from United anticipated before the window slams shut.
