MK Dons’ reward for hammering Manchester United by four goals is a home clash with Bradford City, in a third round draw which did not feature United for the first time in almost two decades.

The last time United did not feature in the third round of the League Cup was October 1995, having been dumped out of the competition by York City in round two.

European football has handed United byes to the third round in recent times – but the lack of a continental adventure this season saw Louis van Gaal’s men tussle with MK Dons in round two, and they suffered a humiliating 4-0 mauling at Stadium MK.

Karl Robinson’s men will be hoping to extend their Cup adventure as they entertain 2013 finalists Bradford in the third round. The Bantams reached this stage of the competition after beating Yorkshire rivals Leeds, a result which cost Peacocks boss Dave Hockaday his job

Other notable ties include Sheffield Wednesday’s visit to Manchester City; and Tottenham Hotspur entertaining Nottingham Forest.

The full draw is as follows:

Chelsea v Bolton Wanderers
Arsenal v Southampton
West Bromwich Albion v Hull City
Crystal Palace v Newcastle United
Leyton Orient v Sheffield United
Cardiff City v AFC Bournemouth
Sunderland v Stoke City
Derby County v Reading
Liverpool v Middlesbrough
Milton Keynes Dons v Bradford City
Manchester City v Sheffield Wednesday
Burton Albion v Brighton and Hove Albion
Swansea City v Everton
Shrewsbury Town v Norwich City
Fulham v Doncaster Rovers
Tottenham Hotspur v Nottingham Forest
