Rooney closing in on Henry strike record

Manchester United frontman Wayne Rooney is two Premier League goals away from eclipsing Thierry Henry's return in the English top flight.

Rooney has bagged 174 Premier League goals, one fewer than former Arsenal man Henry.

The 28-year-old is now two strikes away from becoming the third highest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Arsenal fans, however, will be quick to highlight that Henry’s 175 goals came from only 258 appearances, whilst Rooney has already played a role in 376 Premier League games.

Alan Shearer's 260-goal haul is the best in Premier League history, whilst former United star Andrew Cole is in second place - thirteen ahead of Rooney - with 187 strikes.

159 of Rooney's Premier League goals have come at United, following his £20million switch to the club from Everton in 2004.

Rooney is set to have the opportunity to become the Premier League’s third all-time top goalscorer on Saturday, as he looks to fire United to their first win of the season at Burnley’s Turf Moor.
