United spurned a host of first-half chances as they ended the calendar year with a goalless stalemate at White Hart Lane.

Louis van Gaal's men controlled the opening period, with Juan Mata seeing an effort from a free-kick hammer back off the woodwork.

Phil Jones then headed home a goalmouth scramble, but was denied as both he, and Radamel Falcao, were adjudged to be offside. RVP also went close before the break.

The Dutchman controlled a deft, long-range Michael Carrick chip but couldn't beat Hugo Lloris, who also produced a magnificent diving save to deny Ashley Young from range.

Spurs were more in the game after the break - but neither side could break the deadlock as a year of chance for Manchester United ends with a goalless draw.

Full Time - Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Manchester United (Attendance: 35,711)
