Louis van Gaal has ruled out a late shock, surge for the Premier League title - but has his eyes on Manchester City following a potentially crucial weekend in England's top-flight.

Following the weekend's Premier League fixtures, United sit only two points behind their bitter cross-city rivals, who suffered a shock defeat at Burnley in Saturday's tea time kick-off.

United closed the gap on the Citizens following a fantastic performance against Spurs, with Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney on the scoresheet in a convincing 3-0 win.

"It is too far away," said van Gaal, when commenting on the league summit, occupied by Chelsea who drew at home to Southampton on Sunday.

However, the Dutchman hinted that he's got his eyes firmly on City and the runners-up spot, adding: "We have to go step by step. It is a rat race and we are now two points from the second position."

United face a tricky run-in as we reach the business end of proceedings, with a crucial clash at Anfield against the resurgent Scousers next up for the Red Devils.
