Arsenal gave Manchester United's hopes of a top four finish a huge boost, by heaping more misery on floundering Liverpool in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off.

The Red Devils will go nine points clear of the Scousers with victory against Aston Villa, following Arsenal's 4-1 win at Ashburton Grove.

Hector Bellerin, Mesut Oezil and Alexis Sanchez grabbed goals in quick succession before the half-time break. Liverpool totally fell apart, and Arsene Wenger's men ensured Liverpool have now won only one in four.

Jordan Henderson's penalty have the visitors brief hope, but Emre Can was dismissed and Olivier Giroud grabbed the game's fifth goal late on.

Arsenal's win offers United a fantastic opportunity to further steady their top four position. Victory over Aston Villa would leave a quick return to the Champions League looking very likely.

Southampton and Spurs, both on 53 points, could climb above Liverpool and keep hopes of an unlikely top four finish alive with victories this weekend.

Arsenal leap-frog City with this win, though the Citizens would reclaim second spot with a win at Crystal Palace on Easter Monday.
