Sad Stats: United no longer FA Cup darlings

Arsenal's 12th

Manchester United have lost their record as the most successful club in FA Cup history, after Arsenal won the famous trophy for a 12th time with a thumping 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

In a game which, sadly, kicked-off at 5.30pm, the Gunners totally dominated and swept aside Tim Sherwood’s Villains thanks to strikes from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Oliver Giroud.

That means Arsenal have now won the FA Cup on 12 occasions – one more than United.

Remember how happy we were to eclipse Liverpool’s 18 English titles? Off their perch, and all that. Sigh.

Certainly, it’s difficult not to feel deflated about no longer being the most successful entrant of the world’s most famous cup competition.

In third sit former darlings Spurs, who have won eight FA Cups, but are without a triumph in 24 years. Since then, United have won the tournament four times, and Arsenal on a whopping seven occasions.

When United last won the FA Cup, with a 3-0 victory over Millwall at the Millennium Stadium in 2004, Arsenal had won the trophy on nine occasions. Since then, even with a nine-year trophy drought, the Gunners have eclipsed United.

Since the turn of the millennium, the Red Devils have won the FA Cup only once. Whilst Louis van Gaal will feel a sense of 'job done' after leading his charges back into the Champions League, some overdue Cup success would offer a huge boost to the Red Army.

Just. smiling smiley

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Arsenal fc

Let’s keep making history
