Manchester United made it three wins on the bounce – but left it late at Vicarage Road, with a Troy Deeney own-goal ensuring maximum points headed back to the North West.
In a dramatic finale, Deeney turned Bastian Schweinsteiger's cross into his own net, only minutes after having restored parity from the penalty spot.
The late excitement unfolded after United had taken an eleventh minute lead courtesy of Memphis Depay.
Deeney’s penalty was the first goal United have conceded since a 1-1 draw at CSKA Moscow on 21 October.
The result temporarily put United top of the tree; before Leicester City claimed poll position after an emphatic win at Newcastle. The two teams meet next weekend in an unlikely top-of-the-table clash.
Full Time – Watford 1-2 Manchester United
Attendance – 20,702
