Manchester United face an injury headache ahead of Wednesday evening’s crunch Champions League encounter with PSV Eindhoven - with Ander Herrera and Phil Jones set to miss out for the Red Devils.

Both Herrera and Jones exited the field early on Saturday lunchtime through injury, as United claimed a last-gasp victory at Vicarage Road.

Louis van Gaal expects both players to miss the visit of PSV on Wednesday – exacerbating an injury problem which the United boss describes as “lousy”.

The Dutchman said: “We are in a lousy period for injuries. We have a lot of injuries. We have a big problem and now Jones and Herrera are not available, I think, for Wednesday.”

Defender Jones has twisted his ankle, whilst Herrera has a hamstring problem.

United have a series of injury problems across the squad - with attack-minded Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and James Wilson all in the treatment room.

Luke Shaw continues to recover from a broken leg, with Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia joining a lengthy list of concerns.

Wednesday's encounter is crucial in United's search for European glory. The Red Devils currently top Group A, but sit one point ahead of PSV and Wolfsburg, and three clear of CSKA Moscow, with two Pool B games remaining.
