Warren Joyce's second-string claimed a 1-0 victory over Sunderland on Monday evening; closing the gap on the Black Cats at the top of the table to three points.
Captain James Weir grabbed the only goal of the game in a highly competitive contest at Leigh Sports Village.
A resolute Sunderland proved difficult to break down, and United had a barrage of opportunities before Weir broke the deadlock shortly before the 70-minute mark.
Adnan Januzaj, Andreas Pereira and Will Keane were in action for the Red Devils' Under-21 side.
