Manchester United slipped to seventh in the Premier League table, following Tottenham Hotspur's narrow home win over Sunderland.
Spurs jumped above United, and into third spot, with Harry Kane's goal the difference against the Black Cats. This came hours after United fell to a third successive loss, beaten 3-1 at Watford.
Elsewhere, on Sunday, Crystal Palace moved to within two points, and one place, of United with a thumping 4-1 home win over Stoke City.
Southampton, meanwhile, pulled clear of the relegation zone as Charlie Austin's second-half effort proved enough to beat the Jacks.
With attentions now turning to the League Cup, and Northampton Town, Jose Mourinho's men return to Premier League action on Saturday, as champions Leicester City visit Old Trafford in a lunchtime kick-off.
