The Dutch striker netted the first of United's goal, and was also awarded the sponsors man of the match, thrilling the 67,000 crowd in Seattle.

"I think we all looked very fit and played well. We could have had a bit more possession and they made most of the play but it was our first game and their fifth," said Van Nistelrooy.

"They had more of the ball but you could not see a big difference. It's great to start against great teams like Celtic and other teams that we play against later will bring us into the shape we want to be."

Van Nistelrooy went on to praise United's new signing David Bellion. The French winger made his debut for the Reds in Seattle, and found the net from an acute angle to score United's fourth and final goal against the Uefa Cup runners up.

"We are all so happy for Bellion. He worked very hard in pre-season and it's a great start for him.

"The young lad did very well, and has a bright future ahead of him"

Ruud was also delighted with the massive support United have received in the US, and believes the tour will help boost the popularity of football in the country.

"It's great to win here 4-0 and it was amazing to see how many United fans are based in America - I didn't expect that at all.

"You come to America and don't know what to expect - you expect people to talk about soccer, but it was all great football fans and United fans too, so what more can you want?"

United continue their pre-season tour of the States on Sunday, against Mexican outfit Club America.
