Ex-United star David Beckham could have taken the lead in the first half from the penalty spot, after Steven Gerrard was brought down by Alpay, but Becks slipped and blazed the penalty over the bar. Alpay then started to tease the England captain for missing and had a bit of a tussle in the tunnel at half time. Paul Scholes had plenty for chances to end his England goal drought, but he couldn't find the back of the net. His biggest chance came early in the first half, when fellow United player Gary Neville whipped in a left footed cross, but Scholes headed it over. Nicky Butt was incredibly effective in the diamond shaped midfield and kept Emre completely out of the game. The game ended goalless but England have booked their ticket to Portugal. The Teams Turkey: Rustu, Uzulmez, Korkmaz,
Akyel, Alpay, Emre (Penbe 79), Buruk (Mansiz 68), Tugay, Sukur, Nihat,
Yalcin (Sanli 61). England: James, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Campbell, Terry, Butt, Gerrard, Beckham, Scholes (Lampard 90), Rooney (Dyer 73), Heskey (Vassell 69). |
