Manchester United came out on top of the 'battle of Britain' after an early Phil Neville goal. Neville struck on the 5th minute to deal the three points for the Red Devils and see them move ahead of Glasgow Rangers in group E. Ryan Giggs was back in the line-up, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo who took his place at Elland Road. There was drama after just 35 seconds when John O'Shea clashed with Peter Lovenkrands and earned himslef a yellow card from referee Anders Frisk. United broke the deadlock just after 5 minutes when Dutch hit-man Ruud van Nistelrooy found Phil Neville who took it past a number of defenders and coolly slotted the ball home past Stefan Klos. 1-0 United. Rangers were having most of the possession and kept on testing United, but they lacked the much needed killer instinct. Paolo Vanoli should have scored when the ball fell to his feet after Lovenkrands' header and Risken's shot were both blocked. The ball fell nicely to him but failed to keep his composure and fizzed it wide. Tim Howard's finger tips kept United in the game just before the interval when Shota Arveladze's shot was somehow saved by the American. Mikael Silvestre them had a header blocked off the line from a Ryan Giggs corner. He was unlucky not to score.

Rangers skipper Craig Moore had a header blocked off the line as well in the second half by the influential Phil Neville. Dutch-man Michael Mols threaded Lovenkrands through but Rio Ferdinand came out of nowhere to save United. Lovenkrands then had a shot gathered by the impressive Tim Howard from the resulting corner. Lovenkrands then had a clear-cut chance to equalize but it curled wide of Howard's post.
