Eric Djemba-Djemba sealed a place in the 4th round of the Carling Cup with a late half-volley in extra-time and break the hearts of Leeds fans. Although Sir Alex put out a mix of fringe players and youth players, United were worthy winners.

Eric Djemba-Djemba sealed a place in the 4th round of the Carling Cup with a late half-volley in extra-time and break the hearts of Leeds fans. Although Sir Alex put out a mix of fringe players and youth players, United were worthy winners. Sir Alex, serving the 2nd of his 2 game touch-line ban, made a number of changes from the side that slumped to a 3-1 defeat by the hands of Chris Coleman's Fulham. Roy Carroll replaced Tim Howard between the sticks, David Bellion replaced Ruud van Nistelrooy upfront to partner Forlan, and gave Kieran Richardson a first start of the season. The first real chance of the game fell to Diego Forlan when Darren Fletcher's accurate pass met Forlan and forced a great save by ManUtdWeb's one to watch Paul Robinson. John O'Shea had a nightmare minute in the first half where he gave the ball to Alan Smith but Roy Carroll pushed it out of a corner. Leeds thought they were 1-0 up when Seth Johnson's 20 yard piledriving shot was blocked by Carroll and fell to birthday-boy Alan Smith who was caught in an offside position and his tap-in didn't count.

Leeds found themselves 1-0 up just after the interval when Quinton Fortune put the ball out for an unnecessary corner. World Cup winner Roque Junior rose high and connected with Seth Johnson's corner to put Leeds 1-0 up. But David Bellion was on hand to equalize soon after when Eric Djemba-Djemba's through ball sent David Bellion one-on-one with Paul Robinson and Bellion blasted the ball low through Robinson's legs. Leeds 1 - Man Utd 1 United could have won it there and then when substitute Chris Eagles' fantastic run and low cross nearly met the feet of Forlan but the ball was just too powerful to latch onto.

So the game went into extra-time and United had a goal ruled off-side 9 minutes in when Diego Forlan's head met Darren Fletcher's pin-point cross but Forlan's lovely header didn't count. Leeds then had a penalty shout when French substitute Cyril Chapuis was brought down in the box by Quinton Fortune but referee Paul Durkin waved play on. United then took the lead when Darren Fletcher's low cross was met by Diego Forlan to tap home. 2-1 Man Utd.
1st Half of Extra Time- Leeds United 1 - Manchester United 2
Six minutes before the end Roque Junior scored a surprise 2nd goal when he tapped in James Milner's pass. 2-2. But United prevailed in the end when United scored a training ground set-piece. Quinton Fortune's fantastic corner was met by Eric Djemba-Djemba on the edge of the box and his half volley lobbed Paul Robinson to seal the win for the Red Devils.
