Both teams will go into this game on a real high after extra-time Carling Cup wins for United and Pompey. Pompey beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 after extra-time at Forest's City Ground. United also won a dramatic extra-time battle 4-3 against Leeds with Eric Djemba-Djemba scoring a brilliant late half-volley.

Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith's Premiership plan has gone well so far. They currently lay in 11th position and have beaten Liverpool, Bolton and Aston Villa. 

"After good performances at Arsenal and Man City, we were not at the races against Newcastle and the gulf in class was all too apparent. So we will be looking for a good response against United" said Harry Redknapp

Paul Scholes will miss the match due to an operation on his groin and Sir Alex will make a number of changes from the side that beat Leeds on Tuesday. Roy Keane and Phil Neville return to the starting-line up and Ryan Giggs will make his 350th appearance for the club.

Yakubu will return to the starting line up for Pompey and will partner ex-United star Teddy Sheringham.

“Watch out for Teddy Sheringham.” is the message Sir Alex issued to his players.

“Teddy’s at the forefront of it all, he’s the fulcrum of the team so we have to keep an eye on him.

“Teddy had great years here and never had to depend on pace, he had an economy of movement, his brain has always worked and that’s why he’s able to play at the age he’s playing.” added Ferguson.

The 37 year old will look to punish United for letting him leave the club. 

Sheringham has already scored 6 goals for Pompey this season and will be looking to add more to his tally.
