Duo Named in Euro 2004 Star Squad

Four of England's Euro 2004 squad have also been named in the 23-man all-star team. Arsenal team-mates Sol Cambell and Ashley Cole along with Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney all made it.

Uefa have claimed that the team is not based on reputation of players, but the inclusion of Luis Figo would suggest otherwise. The famous midfielder performed only once throughout the tournament, during Portugal's 2-1 semi-final triumph over Dick Advocaat's Netherlands, yet he still found his way into the 23-man squad.

"The idea is to recognise the top performers that have graced the event," said an official.

"People who have shown leadership, brilliant attacking, good goalkeepers. It's been a difficult choice, but we finally came to a collective decision. The team is based on the tournament and not on reputation."

Goalkeepers: Petr Cech, Antonios Nikopolidis.

Defenders: Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Traianos Dellas, Olof Mellberg, Ricardo Carvalho, Georgios Seitaridis, Gianluca Zambrotta.

Midfielders: Michael Ballack, Luis Figo, Frank Lampard, Maniche, Pavel Nedved, Theodoros Zagorakis, Zinedine Zidane.

Strikers: Milan Baros, Angelos Charisteas, Henrik Larsson, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Ruud van Nistelrooy.
