Forlan Secures Spanish Switch

Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has secured a move to Spanish outfit Villarreal, believed to be in the region of £1 million, on a 5-year contract. Forlan, 25, endured a tough 2 and a half years at Old Trafford after signing from Argentine side Independiente.

Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has secured a move to Spanish outfit Villarreal, believed to be in the region of £1 million, on a 5-year contract.

Forlan, 25, endured a tough 2 and a half years at Old Trafford after signing from Argentine side Independiente for £7.5 million.

The Uruguayan international netted just 14 goals in 97 appearances as a Red Devil but his enthusiasm and of course double against Liverpool made him a favourite with the United faithful.

"Sir Alex Ferguson spoke to me and said that I would not really get many chances to play this season and recommended I accept the move." admitted the forward.

He added: "I'd like to thank Sir Alex for allowing me to leave given there were so many players injured."

"I am not going to set myself targets but I am coming here to work hard and do the best I can."

With the arrival of Alan Smith and Louis Saha, competition will be fierce to gain a spot up-front this season and Forlan wants to play regular, first-team football week-in week-out.
