Ferdinand to Become England Skipper?

Rio Ferdinand is in the frame to become the next captain of England. Sven-Goran Eriksson has spoken with high regard towards the leadership skills of the Manchester United defender.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand could be named as the next England captain in another twist of what has been a sensational year for the towering centre-half.

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is said to be very impressed by the plaudits Ferdinand has picked up since his stunning return to the Red Devils backline. A controversial eight month suspension had seen Ferdinand out of action since the start of 2004.

Despite his grievances with the Football Association, Ferdinand his hungry to represent his country again and will return to the England fold next weekend for the eagerly anticipated World Cup qualifier against Wales at Old Trafford.

In the absence of Roy Keane, Ferdinand was United skipper for the recent European Cup demolition of Fenberache, watched in admiration by England chief Eriksson. The Swede could now give the former Leeds defender the chance to wear the arm band at international level.

“I was very impressed with Ferdinand against the Turkish champions and he looked good as captain,” said Eriksson. “He is a leader for the future and there is no question he is ready to return to the England team.”

Supporters had their doubts over whether Ferdinand would make much of an impact on his football return, and his attitude was questioned after the £30million giant mocked his lengthy ban on a television advert. However, Ferdinand has looked solid in defence so far and has evidently matured as a professional.
