United Miss Ruddy Swoop

Everton have beaten Manchester United to the much-wanted signature of Cambridge United's John Ruddy, one of England's hottest goalkeeping prospects, at the end of the current season.

Ruddy was first chased by the Red Devils, along with an array of other top clubs, spending two-weeks on trial at Carrington and appearing in a Reserve team fixture.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Glasgow Celtic and Championship side Wigan Athletic all kept a close eye on the 18-year-old - but David Moyes was first to make a lucrative swoop.

The Toffees, flying high in the Premiership and chasing a European spot, were looking for a replacement for the ageing Nigel Martyn and Ruddy will fit the bill nicely.

Transfer funds have been increased at Goodison following the sale of Wayne Rooney to United and have already snapped up James Beattie.

Cambridge boss Steve Thompson has revealed he is pleased for the youngster. “I’m pleased for the boy, he’s a very good goalkeeper and I’ll wish him all the best after the end of the season.”
