With a 3rd position Premiership finish very likely and a possible FA Cup trophy in the bag for this season, the majority of fans deem this term as somewhat unsuccessful. Sir Alex Ferguson has received much criticism this year for bad League performances and getting knocked out early on in the Champions League.

Here is what the United fans think of the situation and what the club can do to rectify mistakes, on and off the field.

I believe these performances are down to the players and not to the manager.

Our performances have taken a nose dive since we realised that it's impossible to overtake Chelsea this season. I know we always thought so. I players have played well as long as they though there was a possibility of a title even though remote it might have been.

But once they realised no blips coming they haven't had the same hunger for 2nd spot. Maybe it's Fergie's fault then that he is not having the guys play at their best but our players have given up.

Buy Michael Essien, give Jon Spector, Rossi and Pique a shot. Maybe even Kieran Richardson. Shake Ruud van Nistelrooy up also.

The problem is these players are paid too much. There are a very few who truly wear the club on their sleeve, battle for every ball and chase everything for the cause - sadly today they are few and far between. The stardom they thrive upon is destroying the game.

The heart and sole has been ripped out of the playing staff in recent seasons. Whilst the likes of David Beckham and Nicky Butt have moved onto pastures new, breaking up a monopoly of players who have formed the bedrock of success for nearly a decade, foreign players being paid far too much are now warming the bench, filling up the squad and bolstering already extortionate bank balances for fulfilling simple tasks of being surplus to requirements.

Youth stars do not need to be bought. More of a chance should be given to the young fledglings in the reserves and the under-18’s who are not shelved out too easily due to the ridiculous competition for places in the senior squad. This trend looks set to continue after our resignation from the Pontoon’s League.

I honestly don’t think we need to spend huge amounts on new players and boost an already mammoth wage bill. Cutbacks should be made to a big squad, young players should get more of a chance, and foreign players should not be brought in with some irrational hope that they one day may fulfill their potential and become world stars.

Some of us have been supporting this team for 33 years now. It is not the players we support, it is the club, it's ethos, it's history, it's footballing style. No one likes losing, but there are times when you get beat, that you gave it everything, but the opposition were just that little bit better.

The 18 player first team Squad i would look at for next year:

Goalkeepers: Maik Taylor, Tim Howard, Luke Steele

Defenders: G. Neville, W. Brown, R. Ferdinand, G. Heinze,Pique, J. Spector

Midfield: D. Fletcher, K. Richardson, C. Ronaldo, M Essien, M. Diarra and a left winger, who I do not know at the present.

Forwards: RVN, W. Rooney, O. Solskjaer, Rossi

Everyone else, i would sell on or let go. It is a young team, but young players tend to be hungry and want success. Have Roy Keane as deputy manager learning the ropes from Sir Alex before taking over 2006-2007.
