Rooney Crowned Young Player of the Year

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has picked up the PFA Player of the Year Award on the same say he helped the Red Devils to victory over Newcastle with a sublime volley, worthy of a Goal of the Season Award.

The England international shrugged off competition from fellow Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Chelsea's Arjen Robben, Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Philips and Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing.

Rooney took the accolade off Chelsea's Scott Parker and is delighted with his recognition in his first season at United following a £30 million from Everton. "Obviously for any footballer to receive any award is a great achievement, and especially so when it is one voted for by all your fellow professionals," said Rooney.

Meanwhile, Blues skipper John Terry picked up PFA Player of the Year award at the expense of team-mates Frank Lampard and Petr Cech and also Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry and Andrew Johnson.

Right-back Gary Neville and centre-half Rio Ferdinand were included in the PFA Team of the Season, that lines up:
