Carroll: "I Wanted to Stay"

Roy Carroll has revealed that the deal he was offered wasn't right and felt a move away from Old Trafford after four years as a Red Devil was the right choice for his career.

The Northern Ireland international was released on Friday afternoon along with fellow goalkeeper Ricardo, indicating that Sir Alex Ferguson will almost definitely swoop for another 'keeper in the summer to challenge Tim Howard.

"I've had four great years and I want to thank Sir Alex and the staff, but I have to move on," said the 27-year-old.

"I am a little disappointed because I would have liked to have stayed.

"But I felt the deal being offered just wasn't right and I'm looking forward to playing for another good club." 

Carroll has been linked with a move to a number of Premiership clubs including newly-promoted Wigan Athletic, the club he joined United from back in the summer of 2001.

Several replacements have been linked to fill Carroll's boots, including £10 million-rated Paul Robinson from Tottenham Hotspur.
