Newcastle Fail in Smith Bid

Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has admitted failure in trying to lure Red Devils striker Alan Smith to St. James' Park after United turned down an offer.

Toon have also expressed interest in striker Christian Vieri, released by Internazionale today, but it seems the Italian star favours a move to La Liga rather than Tyneside.

"We made an inquiry for Alan Smith also but were told there is nothing doing," confirmed Souness

"We did inquire about Christian Vieri," he added.

"I got a mutual friend to have a word with the player but it appears he wants to go to Spain.

The former Leeds striker has been linked with a host of Premiership sides including Aston Villa recently, but has always been adamant he's happy at Old Trafford.
