United Switch Sights to Maicon

Manchester United will switch their sights to right-back Maicon if a move for fellow Brazilian Cicinho fails to be grafted before the transfer deadline.

Sao Paulo star Cicinho is having passport and work permit problems that will allow him to play his trade in Europe and is unlikely to bolster the Red Devils' defence in time for the August 31st transfer deadline.

Monaco's Douglas Maicon, a very similar attacking and skilful player to Cicinho, has emerged as United's back-up plan. The Championnat side will be reluctant to let the 24-year-old leave, but will be tempted with a sizeable offer.

Cicinho has admitted he's met with Sir Alex Ferguson regarding a move but Liverpool are also keeping tabs on him, confirming: "Manchester United are a great club that challenges for big trophies, but I have also heard Liverpool are now interested. I went to Manchester and was shown around the training facilities."
