Keane Announces International Retirement

Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has announced his decision to retire for the Republic of Ireland after they failed to reach the World Cup.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has reiterated his intentions to stay at Old Trafford despite tempting links to La Liga giants Barcelona and Real

Keane is also likely to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season to play for a club in a different league from the Premiership or gain coaching badges to concentrate in a career in football coaching or management.

"Like all football supporters in the country I am disappointed the Republic of Ireland failed to qualify for the World Cup finals." said Keane.

"Much as I would like to continue playing for my country, I feel the time has come when I should retire from international football and concentrate on domestic football for whatever remains of my football career."

Regarding the criticism of the Republic's manager, Brain Kerr, he added: ''I believe recent criticism of Brian in the media is unjust and unfair. I would like to thank the players and staff for their efforts.''
