Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Ryan Giggs has fractured his cheekbone and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines following United's frustrating 0-0 draw with French outfit Lille.

"It is a horrible thing to happen but at this stage, it is too early to say what we are going to do about it." said the Manchester United boss.

"I think he got caught by an elbow. It was only when we took him off we realised the extent of the problem."

The Welshman has been on spectacular form in recent weeks and looked was confident to win back his regular place in the Red Devils' starting XI. However, United will now be without left-wing Giggs for sometime which is a major blow to hopes on all fronts.
