Youngster Phil Bardsley has been rewarded with a new contract after grabbing his chance in the Manchester United first-team with both hands.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has reiterated his intentions to stay at Old Trafford despite tempting links to La Liga giants Barcelona and Real

Bardsley, 20, has proved decent cover for the injured Gary Neville and has even shown the many attributes of England international and long-time Red Devil.

Also aided by the injury to Wes Brown, Bardsley has featured in 9 games so far this season and has been reassured of his future by putting pen-to-paper on a new contract, which will expire in 2009.

He beamed: "I'm really pleased to extend my contract."

"It has been great to be involved with the first team this season and to be a part of Manchester United. I want that to continue."
